Iowa Credit Union Advocates Meet with Legislators in Washington, D.C.
November 13, 2023
Iowa credit union executives from around the state and ICUL staff traveled to Washington, DC last week to meet with Iowa's federal delegation and their staff. The annual trip is part of ICUL’s Principal Key Contact (PKC) program, which matches each Iowa Congressperson and Senator with a credit union leader from their district.
Dave Cale (Financial Plus), Renee Christoffer (Veridian), Joe Hearn (Dupaco), Greg Hanshaw (Community 1st), and Scott Zahnle (Greater Iowa) along with ICUL staff Murray Willams, Jaimie Miller, Justin Hupfer, and Madison Grady, attended this year’s trip.
This year's trip coincided with many important credit union bills and amendments being considered in both the House and Senate chambers. Iowa credit union leaders were able to speak with the Iowa delegation about credit and debit card interchange and the negative effects the Credit Card Competition Act would have on Iowa credit unions and their members. The group also discussed the importance of passing the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, which provides federal credit unions flexibility as to the number of required board meetings, and passing the CDFI Fund Transparency Act, which requires the Secretary of Treasury or designee to testify before the House Financial Services and Senate Banking Committees.
The group, alongside the Illinois Credit Union League, also met with National Credit Union Administration Vice Chairman Kyle Hauptman during the trip to discuss current regulatory issues facing credit unions.
