Iowans Shredded 82,000 Pounds of Documents at Veridian’s Community Shred Day Events in 2023

October 4, 2023

WATERLOO, Iowa (October 5, 2023) – Veridian Credit Union recently wrapped a series of six Community Shred Day events in communities across Iowa and eastern Nebraska to help people protect their identities from fraud. In total, the six events drew 3,800 people and 95,000 pounds of documents. In Iowa, an estimated 3,280 people attended events in Ankeny, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids and West Des Moines to shred more than 82,000 pounds of documents.

“Safely disposing of unwanted, personal documents is a simple and important task that can help protect your identity,” said Ashtin Hotek, Veridian’s public relations strategist and Community Shred Day coordinator. “We host Community Shred Day events each year to help provide a free and accessible way to do that.”

The shredded material from each event is recycled into commercial-grade paper products. Since Veridian’s first Community Shred Day in 2009, the events have shredded nearly 1.3 million pounds of documents, saving an estimated 11,744 trees and 2,081 cubic yards of landfill space. Veridian will host another series of Community Shred Days in 2024 in Ankeny, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Omaha and West Des Moines. Those dates and other details will be available at veridiancu.org/shred.
