Registrations Now Open for the Annual Mike and Leona Adams Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 25
October 9, 2024
WATERLOO, Iowa (Oct. 9, 2024): Veridian Credit Union is preparing to serve its free, annual Mike and Leona Adams Thanksgiving Dinner through curbside pick-up at the UAW Local 838 on Monday, Nov. 25. A delivery or pick-up time slot reservation is required to receive a free meal and can be requested at www.veridiancu.org/Thanksgiving until Wednesday, Nov. 6. Timeslots are limited and available on a first-come basis.
The Cedar Valley’s largest free Thanksgiving meal is in its 43rd year. It’s named after Mike Adams, the late board member for what is now Veridian Credit Union and member of the UAW Local 838, and his late wife Leona. The couple brought both organizations together to serve the inaugural free community meal in November 1982. The event was originally served for in-person dining until the pandemic prompted a now-permanent shift to curbside pick-up in 2020. Veridian now prepares 1,200-1,300 meals for the event each year, including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn and pumpkin pie.
“Today, as we celebrate Veridian’s 90th anniversary, the Mike and Leona Adams Thanksgiving Dinner remains one of our richest, longest-standing traditions,” said Veridian President and CEO Renee Christoffer. “We’re grateful for Mike and Leona’s legacy and the example of service they set for all of us.”
In addition to curbside pick-up, Metropolitan Transit Authority (MET Transit) will deliver meals from the event to those living in Cedar Falls, Evansdale or Waterloo without transportation.
Local contributors to the event include College Square Hy-Vee, Martin Bros. Distributing Co., Inc., Metropolitan Transit Authority of Black Hawk County and the UAW Local 838.
