Madison GradyThe upcoming general election on November 5 is an important opportunity for all of us in the credit union industry to exercise our civic duty and make our voices heard. Whether you’re a first-time voter or have cast your ballot in numerous elections, here’s everything you need to know about why voting matters, how to vote, and where to find resources.

Why Vote?

State and federal laws impact credit unions, from the services and products they can offer to who can be a member. That’s why it’s important credit union advocates make their voices heard on Election Day. Your vote helps to ensure we elect candidates that are credit union champions in every level of government, from local officials to national leaders. In addition to voting for candidates, this election also includes important ballot measures and local initiatives that can directly impact you and your members’ daily lives.

How to Vote

There are several ways Iowans can vote in the upcoming election. Iowa allows voters the option of voting early in-person or voting by mail. Each county has its own rules so it’s important to check what voting options are available where you live.

  • In-Person Voting: Polling places will be open on election day from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Make sure to look up your polling site before election day so you can make a plan to vote on November 5. Don’t forget to bring a government-issued form of identification with you.
  • Early Voting: Iowa allows early voting to give voters flexibility if they’re unable to vote on election day. Early voting is available at county auditors offices from October 16 through November 4 this year. Dates and times vary by location. Find your county auditor office here.
  • Mail-In Voting: If you prefer to vote by mail, you need to request your ballot as early as possible. October 21 is the last day to request an absentee ballot this year. To request an absentee ballot or for more information about mail-in voting, visit the Iowa Secretary of State’s website. All mail-in ballots must be received by county auditors by November 5 at 8:00 p.m.

Voting Process and Resources

Voting can be a straightforward process but it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with what to expect depending on how you decide to vote.

  • Register to Vote: Ensure you are registered to vote. Check your voter registration status online. If you are not a registered voter, you can learn how to pre-register here. Iowa does offer Election Day Registration at the polls.
  • Identification Requirements: Iowans are required to show identification when voting in-person. You can view accepted forms of voter identification here.
  • Sample Ballots: Knowing who and what will be on your ballot before election day can help you make informed decisions. Before you head to the polls, review your sample ballot or look up your ballot on your county auditor’s website.
  • Voter Accessibility: Iowa offers services for voters with disabilities. If you, a family member, or friend requires special assistance, please review Iowa’s voting with assistance guide.

Many elections are decided by narrow margins, and your vote can make the difference in your community. Voting is a chance to have your voice heard in shaping the future, addressing issues that matter most to you, and holding your elected officials accountable. Please share these resources with your coworkers, members, friends, and family and make your voice heard on November 5!
